World Osteoporosis Day
World Osteoporosis Day falls on 20th October. It aims to create awareness about the disease, its risk factors and treatments available for Osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis literally means ‘porous bones’ and is often referred to as the ‘fragile bone disease’. It is a disease characterized by low bone mass and loss of bone tissue that may lead to weak and fragile bones. This weakness of bone may further lead to bone fractures. As a person ages, bone mass density decreases. Especially in case of woman, menopause can accelerate this process due to the loss in oestrogen levels.
World Osteoporosis Day is a global initiative for encouraging people to take modifiable action to reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis.
