World Leprosy Day |

The World Leprosy Day is observed on 31st January 2008. This is an attempt to create
awareness about leprosy and also to encourage activities aiming at leprosy eradication.
|

|
Leprosy was recognised in the ancient civilizations of China, Egypt and India. The
very first written mention of leprosy in India is dated 600 BC, where it is denoted
by the Sanskrit term ‘kushtha’. Over the centuries, leprosy has emerged not only
as a serious public health concern but also as a serious social stigma. Since time
immemorial, the afflicted have often been ostracized by society and even their families.
