Every year 14 June is celebrated as the World Blood Donor Day (WBDD). Established
by the World Health Assembly, this day marks the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, the
Nobel laureate who discovered the ABO blood group system. The first World Blood
Donor Day was celebrated on June 14, 1995.

This day pays tributes to the millions of people who selflessly donate blood which
is a life-saving gift for everybody. It also aims to raise awareness of the need
for safe and regular blood supply.
Every year different countries host this annual event. This year (2009), Australia
will host the World Blood Donor day. The global theme for 2009 is ‘Achieving 100
per cent non-remunerated donation of blood and blood components.’ It has a tag line
as ‘It takes all types’. It serves as a reminder that almost anyone can donate blood;
all types of blood (A, AB, B and O) are needed.
