World AIDS Day |
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared December 1st as ‘World AIDS Day’. The day was initiated following a summit of Health Ministers in London in 1988. The aim of celebrating World AIDS Day is to focus global attention on the HIV/AIDS epidemic and to accelerate the efforts required to check its spread.
The opportunity is also used to raise awareness about the AIDS pandemic, which has created a threat to people all over the world.
On this occasion, different organisations come together and carry out different activities to increase the cooperation and correspondence between masses and HIV affected people.
Each year a theme is chosen to highlight different aspects of this health issue. The theme for 2009 is 'Universal Access and Human Rights'.
The above red ribbon is an international symbol of AIDS awareness that is worn by people to demonstrate care and concern about HIV affected people.
